Farewell ceremony - 22 Aug 2008

Dear all,

Thank you so much for organising and preparing for this farewell ceremony! It was really a success. And those who planned to make me cry, it was a success too!

Today, it was really a memorable event. I really enjoyed the whole session. Thanks to Mr Nasser, Crystal, the commitee as well as SLC members. I was really surprised by Crystal a lot. Thank you so much for the token of appreciation!

There was a formal passing-down ceremony after the whole event whereby i hand over all the documents and files to Crystal. Therefore, i have officially stepped down from SLC. Crystal is now officially the President and Gayathri is the Vice-President of SLC.

I wish to see SLC developing to higher standards and there are many more achievements in the future. Most importantly, i wish to see all the SLC members being very close to one another and do feedback to the committee if you have any suggestions and share yours ideas with one another. Work hand in hand with one another to make SLC well-known in Millennia Institute.

Service Learning Club is all about being Passionate in what you do, excelling in that and always having high spirit to serve others.

With that in mind, i hope that SLC members will really be passionate in whatever you do and give your best both in your service and in your studies. I wish you all the best!

Mentoring session at hillgrove secondary school will resume from 12 July 2008 (saturday) onwards. Tutors, pls report to the level 2 classroom by 8:40am.

The permanent mentor-mentee schedule will be out soon so that tutors and students will not be confused for the next few months.

Next, pls take note of the farewell ceremony that will be held in MI on either 16 July (wednesday) or 18 july (Friday) as it is time for me and Cheryl to step down officially and hand over to the PU2s. It is an important event and i would like everyone of you to attend the event. The confirmed date of the ceremony will be announced by Crystal soon.

I have arranged for some teachers to take care of the kids so at the moment, I will not require your group to be with me coz there are quite a few logistics issues to take care of but I have promised the kids that your group will still visit us at the centre when school term starts. Dear all, please pay Crystal the $24 for the CCA shirt lastest by Wed, 7th May '08. While I understand that not everyone is able to pay $24 outright, please also try to understand that we're ordering in bulk and can't afford to pay on the behalf of so many people. For those who are unable to pay by this Wed, please approach us personally.

As for students on the fianancial assistance scheme, please see us personally. Rest assured that your indentity will be kept confidential. We will check with the school and subsidy would be granted, you will only need to pay $6 for the T-shirt. Thank you.

Lastly, this is my final warning to the minority who blatantly refuse to turn up for meetings, reply my sms or phone calls for the past 2 weeks. We will not be able to order the shirt for you should you not provide us with your payment and T-shirt size by this Wednesday. So, do as you deem fit, no further reminders will be made.

We will be starting our CIP programme next week at the child care near Bukit Batok CC. There will only be 2 time slots available:
Option 1 - Wednesday 4.30pm - 5.30pm
Option 2 - Friday 4.30pm - 5.30pm
Please note that it is impossible to go any earlier as the childrens' nap time is at 2pm. You can either coach them or entertain them with songs or games. Further details to be confirmed at a later date.
Please indicate via the comments link for this thread, together with your name & class, as to which time slot is more favorable for you. Please do so by the end of this week. Thank you.

In addition, you are to divide yourselves into groups of 2-3 people each. Each group is to come up with a T-shirt design for our CCA. The shirt must have collar, and must fulfil the following requirements:
- Must have MI logo (just the logo will do)
- Must have the words "Service Learning Club"
- Must have our slogan "we aspire to inspire"
- Shirt must be black or white
- No more than 3 colours used

Please do a good job as you will be wearing the shirt for 3 years. The designs will be collected and posted onto the blog for everyone to vote.

There will a short meeting on 9th Jan (Wed) at 1.30pm outside the art gallery.
Agenda for the meeting:
- Confirm price/colours with regards to the CCA shirt
(maximum price you're willing to pay, how many colours do you want etc)

SUGGESTED PACKING CHECKLIST

You are adviced to bring the following items for your stay during the camp:

1. Attire for physical activities, T-Shirts and shorts (2 sets, you may bring 3 sets just in case)
2. Sports shoes and socks
3. Pyjamas/ appropriate sleepwear
4. Sleeping bag or any other thing that you feel comfortable sleeping on
5. Undergarments (no need to specify how many right?)
6. Towels and toiletries ( toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, face wash, bleach, etc)
7. Sanitary napkins (umm..) - OPTIONAL
8. Slippers and/or sandals
9. Umbrella / poncho / raincoat
10. Torchlight (is prohibited during nightwalk - you can only use it to find your way to the toilet after lights out)
11. Handphone Charger (OPTIONAL)
12. Prescribed medication (if any; We will not dispense any medication to participants)
13. Water bottle(s)
14. Scissors / Penknife
15. Writing materials
16. Plastic bags (in case you wet your pants and need to keep them somewhere)
17. Ez-link with minimum value of at least $5

18. Sweater / jacket/ windbreaker/ cap/ hat/ tutu/ helmet/ bullet proof vest

Ø You are advised not to bring valuables of any kind – jewellery or large sums of money. (unless you are giving them to me)

Our camp will be from 6th June to 8th June.

I believe Crystal and Cheryl have passed you guys the consent forms already. Please return them to Crystal during your SEL camp! Thanks!

If you are wondering what we will be doing in the camp, kindly refer to the program below.

Pls note that it is complusory (unfortunately) and that you will need to contribute 5 bucks for the food. Unless you have valid reasons (and tell us beforehand), we regret that you most likely will not be excused.

Anyway, even though the program appear a bit boring- it is not that grim as it appears [we drew it up like that to impress the teachers, etc], its supposed to be fun. =)

1. The time and schedule will be as per normal, meet at 8, we leave at 8.15, and so on. [refer to 26th April's schedule if you have any uncertainties].

2. Tutors are urged to continue teaching their students ALGEBRA during Math.

3. The application to join the mentoring programme is now closed. We will not be accepting any more new members. [as we only have limited number of mentees]

4. 5th May will be the last mentoring session you guys will be having for the time being. Mentoring sessions will recommence after our mid year exams [mid July]. However, please still keep your saturday mornings free, we are planning for the mentees to come to our school for some activities after they have finished their mid-years exams. Do keep 5 - 7 June free too, we are gonna hold a camp on these 3 days. We will continue to keep you informed of the details.

Math lessons

Tutors are to focus their math lessons this 2 weeks on ALGEBRA only (as it will be coming out in the student's mid-year exams). Please use your student's textbook for assignments.

Debra's death

Some of you might have learnt from the news during the week that a student from Hillgrove Sec, Debra Koh drown in a moonson drain on sunday while trying to retrive her phone. Debra used to be a student in our mentoring program last year, also, half of the student population in our mentoring programme are Debra's ex-classmates. Therefore, we urge you to be discreet and sensitive towards the issue. Mentors might consider against trying to actively counsel the mentees or bring up the issue, unless your mentees approach you. We want to keep everything as normal as possible.

thanks for visiting our website.

its not exactly in its most complete stage, so please bear with us for the moment.

WHAT WE DO

Basically, we go to this secondary school called hillgrove sec every saturday morning (9 to 12) to help the students in their school work. This students are from the secondary 2 normal academic stream . On top of that, we will organise activities/ bonding sessions which will take place every last saturday of the month. during this time, we may watch a movie, go for excursions, play games, etc.

we will be holding special workshops (tutoring, mentoring & event planning) to prepare the mentors/ tutors for the programme.

Because this is ultimately a student-initiated project, we will constantly mould our activities to cater to the needs of our tutors/mentors, so long as they stay in principle as service learning opportunities.

BENEFITS OF JOINING

1. you get to brighten up someone's life

2. it will not interfere with your studies (You weekdays are entirely for your studies)
